Erik Randall Lindberg
Tucson, Arizona
This
photograph was taken at the San Xavier Mission in Tucson Arizona. I a
secondary building on the site that was once the mortuary chapel, now
contains many statuettes and candles. The resulting space is an
overwhelmingly spiritual experience. In the photograph, Mary is looking
downwards to the many beneath her seemingly offering her loving embrace.
This embrace is also extended towards jesus, just below her on the
cross. Despite the classic portrayal of Saint Mary, it is the outside
factors in this photograph that really humanize her in this picture.
Rather than the seemingly cold mother she often that she often
resembles, Mary appears as a guiding figure, offering herself to those
in need.
